ZAHID AFZAL, M.D.

Dr Afzal is a distinguished gastroenterologist dedicated to providing compassionate care and advanced treatment solutions for digestive health. With over 20 years of experience in clinical practice, Dr. Afzal has built a reputation for excellence in diagnosing and managing a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders. 

Dr. Afzal’s clinical interests encompass the full spectrum of gastrointestinal conditions, from common ailments such as acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome to more intricate cases requiring endoscopic intervention and therapeutic procedures. He is known for his meticulous approach to patient care, combining evidence-based medicine with a patient-centered philosophy to achieve the best outcomes for his patients.  He is trusted by his peers and patients alike.

Dr. Afzal is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.  He completed his Internal Medicine residency and fellowship in Gastroenterology at University of Missouri-Kansas City.  He received an award for outstanding medical resident out of his entire graduating class in Internal Medicine.

Dr. Afzal has been practicing gastroenterology since 2005 and is exceptionally proficient in colon cancer screening, treating acid reflux and GERD, gastrointestinal bleeding and irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. 

He has co-authored research about esophagitis, blood thinners, pain relief and other topics. Dr. Afzal participates in clinical research studies and recently enrolled patients to study a blood test under development to be used in colon cancer screening.  

Dr. Afzal holds memberships in:

  • American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE)
  • American Gastroenterological Association (AGA)

His affiliations include Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Advocate Christ Medical Center and Oak Lawn Endoscopy Center in Oak Lawn.  Dr. Afzal has offices in New Lenox and Manteno, IL.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Afzal enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, flying his drones, and exploring new culinary experiences. Fluent in English, Urdu/Hindi and Punjabi, he values diversity and strives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all his patients.
